From the founding of Jamestown to the time of Washington and Jefferson, every plantation owner made cider, drank cider, and bragged about his cider.
Fruit
COE'S GOLDEN DROP is also known as Bishop's Thumb and Golden Drop. From Essex, England, it was first recorded in 1842, and there is some concern that the variety available now in the United States is not the same as the original. Small in size, the shape is tall and conical, and the yellow skin is flushed crimson with russet patches. The yellowish flesh of this dessert apple is firm and crisp with a sweet subacid flavor, vinous, like the Stayman Winesap. The scab-resistant hardy tree grows upright and bears heavily. Stems are conspiciously long. It ripens in late September
